Like me you may have fallen victim to a premium number scam.
Mine was an auto dialler, loaded onto the family PC, after a popup promised my 12 year old daughter "Free Games" to download now, click here.
Once the dialler was on the PC it started
to call the 09 number at £1.50 per minute.
The maximum call was £16.00 - Luckily my
daughter told me something was wrong and
I pulled the phone line, while investigating
what was happening. The call cost amounted
to £140 - ICSTIS has since fined this company
(AKU GmbH) £50,000 - and given me an address
in Germany to apply for a refund - I doubt
if ICSTIS or myself will ever see a penny...
I have since hassled BT, including threatening to report them to the police for accessories to theft. I now have a full refund, and 09 numbers bared from my phone - this took 5 months and many calls and emails.. I have a feeling something very rotten is going on in the world of telecoms. They are all making a nice income from the various premium numbers, some legitimate, and many out right scams.
It would make sense that all phones are bared from using 09 numbers, and the subscriber needs to contact the phone company to enable premium numbers - but they wont do this because they will lose millions in lost revenue...
